So, you have decided to design and create your dream home from the ground up? Congratulations! But what are the things that you need to get your started and carry you through the whole process?

Alternatively, you may be doing some research into whether you should go ahead and build your own home or whether you should just buy an existing property. This guide can help you decide when you see some of the things you have to consider. You can also read our guide on buying a house vs building a home.

Without any further ado, Premier Lofts is here to explain some things that you have to think about very carefully if you are wanting to build your own dream property.

Be aware of what you are getting into

Many people get caught up in the fantasy of building their own home that they do not actually stop to consider what it is that they are fully getting into. As enjoyable as the process can be, you must take into account how much of a massive commitment building your own place is.

The early stages of designing tend to be a lot less busy then the later stages. Once the house is framed and the construction gets moving, you will be very, very busy indeed.  If you are in a situation where you are already feeling overwhelmed in other aspects of your life, it may not be the best time for you to build. Although the builders will be doing the physical work, you will be present at the site a lot checking everything is going to plan. You will also be in contact with the various people working on the project at all times.

Also, you need to be realistic about how expensive this is likely to be. Money is one of the main causes of stress for people and if you are not financially stable at present, it may not be the right route for you at the moment, at least. If you are serious about building your own property, you will need to be serious about saving.

Hire the right people

One of the most important things to help your project run smoothly is keeping the best people to work with you. A house is one of the biggest investments a person can make ad you do not want a compromise on quality.

Hiring the right people for the job can seriously make or break your experience since you will be working closely with the architect and the builder throughout the process.

If you are building a particular style of home or it is in a particular area, you should make sure that the architect and builder are experienced and comfortable working in that department so that you can be confident that they know what they are doing.

Do not just go for the first architect or builder you find, you should have a chat with a few and get a feel for their work ethic and their experience. It is also important to get on well with the people you choose to hire as you will be dealing with them and spending a lot of time with them.

Consider details early on

If you have particular furniture you want in your home, you will need to make sure the build accommodates these pieces. There is nothing worse than completing the build and not being able to fit your bespoke sofa into the place you hoped it would sit.
